This course will teach you the basics to start in OpenRoads Designer. This course covers how to start a work session and create your first design file. We review the user interface and introduce you to standard and frequently used tools. We address model types, views, and user settings necessary for design file setup. You will learn about civil features, feature definitions, and the significance of design file libraries.
If you are new to OpenRoads Designer, you’ll want to complete this course before starting into other OpenRoads training.
The material presented in this course will teach you the basics of the following topics:
Common and frequently used tools
Model types and their purposes
Navigating and viewing design models
Civil Features and Feature Definitions
Setting Up Your Work Environment
Seed files and DGN libraries
Create a new design file
To participate in this training course, you should have a basic understanding of the following:
Microstation fundamentals
Video Duration: 61 Minutes
Tips:
Turn off your phone, and close your email, text, and social media apps.
Plug headphones or earbuds to your computer.
Go Full Screen when watching videos.
In this course, you will learn the survey data fundamentals in OpenRoads Designer. This course will cover basic tools and processes to get you started in processing and preparing your survey design files. This is a fundamentals course for new users whose purpose is to provide a foundation you can build upon.

In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of creating Terrain Models in OpenRoads Designer. Many methods can be employed to create Terrain Models, and this course will cover some of the most commonly used ones.
The material presented in this course will teach you how to:
Getting Started in OpenRoads Designer
Video Duration: 20 Minutes
This course will teach you the fundamental tools to create, edit, and annotate civil geometry in OpenRoads Designer. Horizontal and Vertical geometry are required to make a 3D model, or corridor, for a road design. The horizontal geometry is used to lay out the alignment and is the parent feature for the vertical geometry
or design profile. In this course, we’ll address a few standard tools and approaches to get you started with the layout and grading of your alignments and profiles.
Video Duration: 37 Minutes
In this course, you will learn the basics of corridor modeling, including the common workflow, tools, and concepts to get started in OpenRoads Designer. Corridor models bring together the alignment, profile, and templates to create a detailed 3D model used for finish grade construction and quantity reporting. You can use many tools and techniques to model your corridors, and this course will establish the foundation you can build on to model even the most complex corridors.
Alignment and Profile Fundamentals
Approximate Duration: 58 Minutes
In this course, you will learn how to use rule-based design to grade a small site, including a building pad, parking pad, and access road. Using rule-based design allows you to create relationships with grading features to automate updates as changes occur. This includes setting pad elevations relative to a surface, creating a design profile at a given slope from another civil feature, and anchoring a design profile to an intersection of civil features. As the grading evolves, you can analyze earthwork volumes and make interactive refinements to achieve a cost-effective grading solution. This course will follow a typical design workflow that you can apply to your design products, regardless of whether you leverage the rule-based approach. The content in this course is also applicable to OpenSite and OpenRail Designer.
To participate in this training course, you should complete or have the knowledge equivalency in the following courses:
Terrain Fundamentals
Video Duration: 43 Minutes
This course teaches you how to use Open Designer products to grade a detention pond. This course will follow a typical grading workflow for a detention pond and demonstrate commonly used grading tools to prepare you for open-space grading on your projects. Rule-based design methodology will grade the entire detention pond based on the pond’s water elevation. You will learn how to create a custom linear template for the pond grading and how to create a terrain from the grading features. After the pond is graded, earthwork volumes will be analyzed, and the pond storage capacity will be determined. After this course, a complex terrain will merge the pond design into the existing ground.
Approximate Duration: 31 Minutes
Subsurface Utility Fundamentals: Course Introduction
In this course, you will learn the basic skills to layout, analyze, and design a drainage network using subsurface utilities in OpenRoads Designer. The Subsurface Utilities in OpenRoads Designer can be used to model various subsurface utilities and includes tools for analysis and design of storm and sanitary sewer systems. This fundamentals course will cover the essential tools for getting started in subsurface utilities, including the standard layout tools that you can use for any type of underground utility. This course will focus on a storm sewer layout and design; however, much of the workflow and tools apply to other utility types.
