Corridor Templates and Display Rules – Part 1: Course Introduction
This course teaches you how to create a template and set up constraints. In OpenRoads Designer, templates and display rules are essential for creating and managing roadway designs. OpenRoads Designer includes several “out-of-the-box” templates suitable for most projects. However, each design is unique and, more often than not, requires manipulating the templates to accomplish your design objectives. Leveraging the capabilities of various template features allows you to adapt to varying conditions and simplify complex designs.
In this course, we’ll build a template that can be pushed through an intersection without additional template drops. To do this, we’ll explore how to define components for standard overrides, including point controls, parametric constraints, and the conditional application of components. We’ll also cover display rules and teach you how to leverage them to automate the display of template components.
NOTE: In Part 2, the template created in Part 1 will be applied to a corridor model to demonstrate Point Controls, Parametric Constraints, and the triggering of Display Rules.
Course Objectives
The material presented in this course will teach you how to:
Setup Points and constraints
Modify Components
Use benching and ditch End Conditions
Use Null Points as triggers
Setup and use Display Rules
Course Prerequisites
To participate in this training course, you should complete or have the knowledge equivalency in the following courses:

In this course, we’ll apply the custom template created in Part 1 to a corridor to grade an intersection. Constraint and Display Rules added to the custom template will be triggered using Civil Features to add a turn lane and remove the curb, sidewalk, and end condition components. In our example, we’ll leverage Point Controls, Parametric Constraints, End Condition Exceptions, and Target Aliasing.
