Getting Started in HEC-HMS Course Introduction
In this course, you will learn how to set up and manage projects in HEC-HMS, preprocess terrain data, and define essential model components such as basins, loss parameters, and routing methods. We will explore how to input and manipulate time-series data, incorporate meteorological models, and run simulations to generate meaningful hydrologic insights. The course also includes guidance on exporting HEC-HMS results to HEC-RAS for further hydraulic analysis.
By the end of this course, you will have a strong foundation in hydrologic modeling using HEC-HMS. You can configure and execute simulations, analyze hydrologic responses, and integrate model outputs into other engineering applications. The structured lessons and practical exercises will ensure you gain hands-on experience with the software, preparing you for real-world hydrologic assessments.
Course Objectives
The material presented in this course will help you to:
Understand the fundamental concepts of HEC-HMS and its applications in hydrologic modeling. Learn how to set up and configure projects, including terrain preprocessing and basin delineation. Gain expertise in defining hydrologic parameters, such as losses, transformations, and routing methods. Develop the ability to run simulations, interpret results, and troubleshoot common modeling issues. Integrate HEC-HMS outputs with HEC-RAS for comprehensive hydrologic and hydraulic analysis.
