The first question you must ask yourself when making a new file in Inventor is, do you want to use the Default Template assigned to your file type, or do you want to select a Specific Template? NOTES: Neither answer is right or wrong. It depends on the company and what you’re designing. If you do many different types of designs for many customers, it’s likely that you have multiple templates to use in different circumstances, in which case you should select the specific template appropriate. If you do things primarily in house, in the same standard, using the same units, it’s likely that the default template is purpose built by your CAD Admin and you can use the default template.

You have chosen to use the Default Template method of creating a new file. Follow the Tasks. NOTES: This method is generally faster and easier, however offers fewer specific options upon file creation.
You have chosen to use the Specific Template method of creating a new file. Follow the Tasks. NOTES: This method offers more flexibility, but tends to be a bit slower – requiring a few extra clicks during initial creation. However, over the long run, should save more time because you don’t have to set up all the things already created in your template such as meta-data, standards, and units.
